The Biblioteca São Lázaro has a collection of more than 20,000 documents in different media for consultation and loan, among children’s books, literature, technical manuals, magazines, newspapers, CDs and DVDs. Access to the services is totally free, as is the request of the reader card (common to the whole network of public libraries in Lisbon) and access to computers and
Wireless and LAN internet.

The Biblioteca São Lázaro also develops an intense campaign promoting books and reading with schools and families, and there are always free activities for young readers on Saturdays. For the adult public, several workshops are regularly held, training sessions and book launches and presentations.

The historical and patrimonial value of the building of the oldest municipal library in Lisbon is indisputable. Founded in 1883, the Biblioteca de São Lázaro is housed in a building of classical neoclassical architecture from the end of the 19th century, with its ex-libris, the Noble Hall, in which the hexagonal layout of the room, the mezzanine and the furniture of the period stand out, transporting the readers to an atmosphere truly unique throughout the city.

The beauty of this hall has motivated an endless number of filming and photography works and it’s worth visiting, in and of itself.
