Bairro das Colónias

Streets of Angola, Guiné, Ilha do Príncipe, Ilha de S. Tomé, Macau, Moçambique, Timor and Zaire, are place names referring to former Portuguese colonies that identify some of the constituent streets of the neighborhood named Bairro das Colónias.

In the grounds of the old Quinta da Mineira or Charca, divided into lots still in the 20’s of the last century, the Bairro das Colónias was born. The construction of the buildings would begin in the following decade, creating one of the best and more coherent Art Déco and modernist sets of Lisbon. Initially it was proposed that the toponymy of the neighborhood honored famous colonialists, but it was opted the names of the former Portuguese colonies instead.
