The Arroios Parish Council promotes sports in and out of the parish through various initiatives, activities and equipment open to the general population.

Examples are the support and establishment of protocols with sports entities, as well as the offer of classes and activities in the Pena Gymnasium or in the Joaquim Campos Sports Complex, composed by the Arroios swimming pool, the sports center and the children’s playground, located in Rua Maria Da Fonte – Mercado do Forno do Tijolo.

Also, the articulation and collaboration with sports programs organized by the Lisbon City Council such as the Olisipíadas, and the organization of its own events like the Aquatic Festival that celebrates the closure of the sport season in the Arroios Pool every year, are part of the sports initiatives in which Parish Council gets involved.

Arroios also has some publicly accessible equipment for outdoor exercise of which stand out the outdoor gymnasium of the Alameda D. Afonso Henriques or the multisport of the Campo dos Mártires da Pátria.


The Pena Gymnasium is a sports infrastructure of the Arroios parish that offers movement classes for people over 55 and yoga classes for adults (> 18 years old). It is located in Rua do Saco, nº 1, next to the Pena Office Branch.

The Joaquim Campos Sports Complex consists of the Arroios Swimming Pool, the Mercado do Forno do Tijolo Playground and the Arroios Sports Complex and its located at Rua Maria da Fonte – Mercado do Forno do Tijolo.

Outdoor Sports

In Arroios, there are some outdoor sports equipment, namely in Alameda D. Afonso Henriques, in Praça das Novas Nações and in Campo das Mártires da Pátria, where you can also find a multipurpose sports field with free public access to play football or basketball.


The Arroios Parish Council is a partner of some sports programs organized by the Lisbon City Counci, namely the Olisipíadas program and the Desporto Mexe Comigo program.


It’s a program organized by the Lisbon City Council in association with the 24 Parish Councils of the city of Lisbon, aimed at children between the ages of 6 and 14. It has 15 modalities such as: handball, athletics, basketball, swimming, table tennis, soccer, chess, volleyball, cycling, gymnastics, rugby, judo, boccia, adapted swimming and adapted athletics.

Desporto Mexe Comigo

It’s a program that is established in a partnership with the Lisbon City Council, the Parish Council of Arroios and the Lisboa Ginásio Clube. The sports activities are Gymnastics, Futsal and Rugby developed in the three public elementary schools of the Arroios (Leão de Arroios, EB nº 1 de Lisboa and Sampaio Garrido).

The Arroios Parish Council knows that sport is physically, socially and mentally beneficent for the entire population. It is often through sport that we experience true moments of sharing, solidarity and mass movements for a wide variety of causes.
